5:30 pm

“Oh, Christ,” I shouted to nobody in particular at the sight of the white Rolls-Royce parked outside the main door of the Wyvern Arms.

“JG 1,” I then read out loud from the number plate. Sir John had come here, unannounced, to check up on my progress. I knew he was worried at the high-level attention the case seemed to attract, but this was ridiculous, wasn’t it?

Then I looked up to see more vehicles, several of which were police cars. As I opened my car door, a siren wailed from behind as a police van pulled up. Adding to the confusion, I saw Mercy flailing her arms by the hotel door.

“Coming, Mercy,” I shouted, sprinting across the car park. “What the hell’s happening?”

“They descended on us, Jack. That one-eyed detective, and she’s brought half the Plymouth police force with her by the looks of things. Arrested Jane Ustrix and took her to the billiard room.”

“Arrested?”

“Yes, and your boss, at least I think he’s your boss—”

“Six foot four all round and looks like something from a Dickens book?”

“That’s him.” She nodded. “Anyway, he arrived as well. Sitting in the bar now.”

“Let’s go in then,” I said, taking a deep breath.

The common room was quiet as we entered, with only a few guests, but including the Dikes, who sat silently at their customary table. A tall, uniformed chauffeur I recognised him as Vassen, Sir John’s driver and, where necessary, bodyguard, stood at the bar talking to Joe Gurney. Next to him was a slim young woman with long brown hair.

“Polly,” I shouted. “What on earth—”

“Here as Sir John’s… what did he call it… I’m his ‘aide de camp’, that’s it.”

“I bet you are, but it’s great to see you anyway.” I threw my arms around her, the intensity of the last few days making a familiar figure all the more welcome.

“Lovely.” She laughed. “But that’s not like our reserved Jack Sangster, is there something in the water here on Dartmoor?”

“We, er… haven’t been introduced.” A voice like ice spoke over my shoulder. “Mercedes Merrivale, and this is my hotel.”

“Polly Darlow, Granville Institute.”

“Old friends with Jack, I suppose?”

“I work with him,” said Polly slowly. “Now, Jack, your presence is requested in the billiard room, and Sir John’s already in there.”

“I’ll show you the way,” Mercy said, before being quickly stopped by Polly.

“Sorry, Mrs Merrivale, the police were quite clear. Just Mr Sangster.”

“Huh,” said Mercy, staring hard at Polly. “Well, anyway, Jack, billiard room’s down the hall near the TV lounge. Can’t miss it.”

“Sangster, there you are,” boomed Sir John, standing, hands on hips, by the doorway. “You know this young lady, I take it?”

He pointed to Jane Ustrix, who sat, head in her hands, at the end of the billiard table, which was strewn with papers, some with printed text, others looking like graphical blueprints of some kind. DI Hawke sat on a chair next to her, and behind them stood Eccles and several uniformed officers.

“Yes.” I nodded. “And I wasn’t expecting you, Sir John.
